About Maun Jewellery Tools

Maun has long been a respected brand within the jewellery sector and community, so much so that our parallel pliers are often referred to simply as Mauns.

We’re renowned for our British made, high-quality, durable tools that are suitable for professional use, last through the years and deliver results.

Benefits of Diagonal Cutting Plier For Hard Wire

Our Diagonal Cutting Plier For Hard Wire is the perfect high-leverage cutter for use with both soft and hard metals. It’s a fantastic tool for securely gripping precious metals. This plier is 140 mm in length, small enough to fit comfortably in hand. Designed with a compound-lever action that multiplies hand force by 18 to reduce effort when cutting.

Maun currently manufactures two types of diagonal cutting pliers:

•   Maun 2990 Diagonal Cutting Plier For Hard Wire. In sizes 140 and 160 mm.
•   Maun 2999 Diagonal Cutting Plier For Hard Wire Comfort Grips in sizes 140 and 160 mm.

These tools come with their own unique benefits and uses.

Piers road-tested a pair, and here’s what he had to say about our Diagonal Cutting Plier For Hard Wire 140 mm.

Watch Piers Review Video

If you don’t have time to watch the whole video, we have highlighted Piers’ key messages as he road tests the 2990-140, a 140 mm diagonal cutting plier. He speaks on the benefits of the tool, and how it can best be used.

Diagonal Cutting Plier For Hard Wire 2990-140. I was quite sceptical about these before I got them, just simply because of wastage. Big cutters generally leave a crippled edge, where they cut, as opposed to if you saw through it, you'd have a nice flat edge on whatever you are cutting.

Piers describes why he enjoys using the tool and its best uses.

“I am actually a fan of these, simply for time-saving.”

“They cut really well, I’m quite surprised what you can cut with them. If you just need to separate two pieces of metal, say you’re milling some wire down and you need to have 2 pieces of wire, one 2ml square and one 1.5ml, these are perfect, absolutely perfect. That’s what I use them for myself, chopping up big stock wire, because the end of the piece is almost sacrificed anyway."

“Whenever you mill the metal out you're always going to get a horrible end you need to cut off and make nice anyway. I use these because they seem to be really tough."

Piers explains that using the Maun Diagonal Cutting Pliers to cut his metal is a much quicker and easier way.

“I don’t know if it’s the motion or the mechanism as to why they are sort of disjointed. For example, this is a piece of 3ml square wire that I've pulled down, it's silver and… cuts straight through. This is what I was talking about when I said that the end is almost sacrificed. You can see there on the top, and then it sort of pinches into a point. But when you're rolling it through the rolling mills, if I wanted to just chop that in half and keep half of it that width and the rest of it pulled down more, these are absolutely fantastic."

Piers comments that his other cutters cannot cut the same thickness of metal as his Maun Diagonal Cutting Pliers can.

“I don’t have to go over to the bench and saw it. The other cutters that I have won't cut this type of thick metal. So, if you do a lot of pulling down, wire, square, round, any shape. These are a handy thing to have."
