Introduction To Piers Carpenter’s Road Tests

Piers Carpenter is an up-and-coming star of the UK jewellery industry. You may have seen him on All That Glitters, the BBC’s jewellery-making talent show. In 2022, he was crowned winner of Series Two.

Find out what happened when we invited Piers to road test some of Maun’s most popular jewellery parallel pliers.

About Maun Jewellery Tools

Maun has long been a respected brand within the jewellery sector and community, so much so that our tools are often referred to simply as Mauns.

We’re renowned for our British made, high-quality, durable tools that are suitable for professional use, last through the years and deliver results.

Benefits of Smooth Jaws Flat Nose Parallel Plier for Jewellery Making

Jewellery makers actively work with precious metals, so having tools that prevent marking is a must. Our Smooth Jaws Pliers provide jewellers with the power to bend and manipulate soft and fragile materials while keeping the metals clear of marks. They are a fantastic tool for securely gripping precious metals. This plier is 140 mm in length, small enough to fit comfortably in your hand.

Maun currently manufactures 3 types of smooth jaws flat nose parallel pliers, in various sizes:

•   Maun 4870 Smooth Jaws Flat Nose Parallel Plier: 125, 140 and 160 mm.
•   Maun 4871 Smooth Jaws Flat Nose Parallel Plier Return Spring: 140, 160 and 200 mm.
•   Maun 4877 Smooth Jaws Flat Nose Parallel Plier Comfort Grips: 140, 160 and 200 mm.

These tools come with their own unique benefits and uses.

Piers road-tested them, and here’s what he had to say about our Smooth Jaws Flat Nose Parallel Plier.

Watch Piers Review Video

If you don’t have time to watch the whole video, we have highlighted Piers’ key messages as he road tests the 4870-140, a 140 mm flat nose parallel plier with two smooth jaws. He speaks on the benefits of the tool, and how it can best be used.

Smooth Jaws Flat Nose Parallel Plier 4870-140. Very similar to the snipe nose parallels in function, inside of the jaws are flat and smooth without teeth.”

Piers describes the differences between using the Maun Snipe Nose Smooth Jaws Parallel Plier against the Smooth Jaws Flat Nose Parallel Plier. He explains the benefits of holding thicker material in the jaws and being able to impart a better grip due to the larger surface area of the jaws.

“I find when using them, if I'm bending up things that are slightly wider, you are going to get surface area hold on the whole material.”

A larger handle enables a better grip on the material in use.

“The handle size is slightly bigger compared to the Snipe Nose pair, which is perfect for using on large things, you have more to get a hold of."

Our parallel action feature is a favourite of Piers. Enabling better grip along the full length of strip material.

“Like the Snipe Nose pair, you can put metal all the way through the jaws, which I really like. If you have a large strip of metal, you can place it all the way through the tool."

Piers explains that he enjoys using this specific tool alongside another Maun tool when bending material.

“I use these a lot with the half-round pair Half Round And Flat Jaws Parallel Plier 140 mm 4876-140. I will hold the metal in both of them at a 90-degree angle. This provides more leverage to bend a piece of metal. Again, with that surface area, when you have a piece like that, you are gripping on the whole surface area, when you're trying to wobble it out or file it, there's much less chance of it moving."

“These are an everyday workhorse that will get the job done.”

Piers comments that he likes the width of the Maun pliers, compared to other pliers available on the market.

“If you had a normal pair of finger-jointed pliers, they are never going to be the same width as these. I like that they are wider."

Piers enjoys the non-spring feature, enabling the tool to stay closed on a piece of material.

"When they close on something, they are pretty firmly locked which is quite nice."

Piers goes on to compare the handles to other pliers available on the market. He tells us the advantages of having metal handles.

"I like the handles on these. I know some people prefer the rubber handles that are on most pliers, but I don't. They are sticky and, if you drop hot metal on them, they burn."

Finishing up, Piers provides his advice on which tools are needed in a tool kit.

"I think if I had to pick a pair between the snipe nose and the flat parallels, I would use the flat parallels for completely different reasons. Because of this, I would recommend having both. I guess it depends on what you do. If you work with heavy pieces, I would go with the flat parallels. I find them really good for heavy work, holding things, bending things and filing things. I love using these to file, if I have a bit of metal that’s fiddly to hold, whack them in these and file away. They are pretty solid. Compared to a finger-jointed pair, these are fantastic for holding things whilst filing."
