Maun's ultimate fencing plier.

The ultimate outdoor tool. Brought to you by the experts at Maun.

Developed for no-nonsense workers. Used by those who care about their craft. Explore our range of quality wire fencing pliers today.

Cut, grip and bend even the toughest fencing wire. These high-quality fencing pliers are the pinnacle in tools for farmers and workers wanting precision with every cut.

The livestock farmer’s workhorse, the Fencing Plier 200 mm is the ultimate multi-purpose tool. Based on the design of our Parallel Plier, it’s the original problem solver: Adapted. Optimised for harsh outdoor conditions with a rugged construction and powerful lever action for work on the farm, day in, day out.

Purpose-built to handle high tensile electric fencing wire, this plier is the definitive fencing tool. Just use the V-slot to manipulate and hold wire securely along the jaw length for twisting, splicing and tensioning. Or thread the wire down the throat of the plier. Perfect for straining, straightening and repairing damaged fencing wire.

The heavy-duty built-in shear type wire cutters mean you only need one tool for doing both jobs. A rust-proof finish is used to prevent corrosion, and you have the choice of zinc-plated handles for a good grip, or softer comfort grips.

Perfect for electric fencing wire cutting, wire pulling, and wire squeezing.

For added ease, try our Fencing Plier Comfort Grips 200 mm. It’s our best fencing plier, but with soft plastic grips around the zinc-plated handles. Same quality, more comfort.

Our pliers have been in action for over 75 years. They’re engineered to last. And have been since 1944.

Fence pliers product details

Durable plier materials

The plier is made from treated steel alloys that are zinc and phosphate finished. The treated steel ensures that the cutting and gripping features are durable and can continue to perform reliably for a lifetime. The zinc and phosphate finishes add a level of protection to the metal surfaces to help prevent corrosion.

A hardened cutting edge for tough metal wire

The cutting edge follows a variant of a diagonal cutting plier profile with hardened edges. This means that the plier is capable of cutting hard material, specified to 2.5mm piano wire whilst being able to cut very close to a surface.

Fencing Pliers vs Combination Pliers

The Fencing plier has a number of advantages over a regular linesman or combination plier.

  1. The “V-Jaw” provides additional grip for fencing wire, which is especially useful when stretching wire for repairs.
  2. The open throat of the plier helps with continuous pulling when feeding wire along a length of fencing.
  3. The external cutting jaw cuts up to 2.5mm Piano wire, 3mm hard wire, and 6mm soft wire, which generally outperforms most regular diagonal cutting and combination pliers. The design also benefits from a compound action mechanism that multiplies the force applied at the handles to maximise a users’ ability to cut harder materials and reduce the effort required to make multiple cuts.

Why we harden our cutting jaws to HRC 62-65

The specification of High tensile fence wire generally sits within the wire specification of medium hard wire. The Fencing plier has 62-65 HRc hardened cutting edges to ensure that the edges are durable and capable of cutting a wide range of fencing wires and other materials associated with wire fencing.

How do the product features help during fencing installation/repair?

These pliers are specifically designed for fencing installation and repair, and their features compliment this in the following ways:

  • The 62-65 HRC Hardened cutting edges are capable of cutting the majority of fencing wire throughout the lifetime of the product.
  • The compound action mechanism reduces fatigue and maximises the users ability to cut harder materials.
  • The open throat allows wire to pass freely through the plier, maximising the length of the jaw to grip and especially useful when pulling wire through the length of a fence
  • The “V-Jaw” provides additional contact surface and grip which is a key benefit when stretching wire to facilitate repairs.
  • Parallel Jaw action ensures greater and more consistent contact against flat surfaces. This can reduce slippage and movement commonly associated with conventional jaws, which close with a v, producing a squeezing effect that pushes materials out of the jaw.

Are they rust-proof?

The finishes help to prevent corrosion and rusting. Over the lifetime of a product depending upon the level of use, the environment that the plier is used, and how the pliers are maintained and stored when not in use, in it is reasonable to expect that the finishes may eventually become worn and damaged.

Can these cutters handle all thicknesses of fencing wire?

We expect that the fencing pliers durability is capable of cutting the majority of fencing wire variants. For some larger diameter, very high-performance fence wires, the user may be unable to cut one action and may have to apply the cut once or twice, repositioning the wire to the back of the cutting jaws on each occasion.

How much do they weigh?

The standard Fencing Pliers weigh 510g, and the comfort grips version weighs 560g.

What types of fencing can they be used on?

These pliers are appropriate for the following types of fencing:

  • Chain Link Fencing
  • Welded Wire Fencing
  • Barbed Wire Fencing
  • Deer Fencing
  • Chicken Wire Fencing
  • Woven Wire Mesh
  • Split Rail Fencing (although wire is not always used on a split rail)
  • Electric fencing (Only when not live/isolated)
  • Gabion Fencing

They're versatile hand tools essential for any fencing project, with a sturdy design that helps with the removal of old nails and staples, as well as ensuring new wire is tight and secure. The parallel jaws allow you to twist wire effectively, a staple task in the installation and maintenance of livestock fencing.

Do you have to sharpen them?

The edges of diagonal cutting forms are not “sharp”; therefore, it is not a case of keeping the tool sharp. Where possible the cut should always be as close to the back of the jaw as it can be.

How should you clean and store them?

The best way to maintain the Fencing Pliers is to ensure that the tool is stored in a cool, dry place, that the product is thoroughly dried if it becomes wet during use and cleaned with a wet cloth, and then thoroughly dried if it becomes dirty during use.

Are there any other tips/best practices to be aware of?

  • Do not use them as a hammer.
  • Ensure the item is correctly stored, as referenced above.
  • Do not use the cutter beyond its maximum specification.
  • If wet, dry after use and before storing.
