Heavy Duty Wire Cutters

(Showing 9 of 9)

Maun's most powerful cutters.

Hard wire ruins ordinary cutters. The edges dent, the cut crushes instead of shearing, and you're left forcing the handles. We built this range to cut hard metal wire cleanly and repeatedly, without that.

Every model is a side cutter parallel plier, made in England, with different tools for general hard-wire work, fencing, confined spaces, live electrical circuits and repetitive production cutting.

Maun Hard Wire Cutters. Built to Stay Sharp.

Maun builds every model in this range with parallel-action jaws and a compound-lever side cutter that multiplies your hand force by 23x to 25x - perfect for cutting hard wire.

  • Compound-lever cutter for less cutting effort: our integrated side cutter uses a compound-lever action that multiplies your hand force by 23x to 25x across the range, with cutting capacities from 1.6 to 2.5 mm on piano wire (very hard high-carbon spring steel), 2.0 to 3.0 mm on hard wire and 3.0 to 6.0 mm on soft wire. You close hard-wire cuts without forcing the handles.
  • Precision-machined, hardened blades for long-lasting sharpness: we harden our cutting edges to HRC (Rockwell hardness) 62-65 on the side-cutter and fencing models and HRC 57 on the long-nose models, all manufactured to BS 3087-7:1996 and ISO 5747:1995. The edge stays sharp through repeated hard-wire cuts where softer blades dent.
  • Parallel-action jaws for full-length grip: the jaws move in parallel throughout use, gripping evenly along useable jaw lengths of 40 to 70 mm instead of pinching at the tips the way pivot-action pliers do. Serrated faces on every model give you a vice-like grip on wire, rod and fastenings.
  • Wire threading and V-slot for secure, wire gripping: wire can be threaded down the throat of every model so you can work along its full length. The side-cutter and fencing models have a V-slot (a notch in the jaw that holds round wire more securely), feeding and holding wire along the full jaw length so you can manipulate it with less hand effort.
  • Made in England, built to last: every model is manufactured in England with a rust-resistant finish, most with zinc-plated handles, and we offer comfort-grip versions with soft plastic handles for longer sessions. We back them all with a 12-month warranty, extendable to two years on registration.

The parallel plier is our original problem solver. With a cutter built in, it grips and cuts hard wire in one tool.

Maun Heavy Duty Cutters. From Bench Wire to Electric Fencing.

Our range has a cutter for every scenario: general hard-wire cutting, confined-space work, fencing, live electrical circuits and repetitive production lines:

  • Cutting hard wire and spring steel to length: our Maun Side Cutter Parallel Plier For Hard Wire 200 mm is built for this. HRC 62-65 cutting edges hold their sharpness cut after cut on piano wire and spring steel, where softer edges dent and stop cutting cleanly. 25x leverage means you close a 2.5 mm piano wire cut without forcing the handles, and the V-slot seats round wire for a clean, grip without swapping tools. For all-day sessions, the Side Cutter Parallel Plier For Hard Wire Comfort Grips 200 mm has the same jaw and cutter with soft PVC handles.
  • Cutting hard wire on live or potentially live circuits: the Maun 1000V Insulated Side Cutter Parallel Plier For Hard Wire 200 mm is the only model in this range certified to IEC 60900 (the international standard for insulated hand tools rated for live electrical work), usable up to 1000V AC and 1500V DC. When a panel or fence energiser won't fully isolate, a bare-metal handle puts your hand in the circuit. This pair has industrial-grade polymer handles with hand-stops and keeps the full HRC 62-65 cutting capacity, so you don't give up any cutting power for the protection.
  • Installing and repairing high-tensile electric fencing: we originally developed the Maun Fencing Plier 200 mm for Southern Hemisphere livestock farmers fitting and repairing high-tensile wire (hard galvanised fencing wire that springs back sharply under tension) day in, day out. It cuts and strips in one tool, so you're not swapping between cutters and strippers when a tensioned line snaps in the paddock. HRC 62-65 edges survive galvanised high-tensile without denting, and the V-slot grips the tensioned wire steady for a clean cut. A comfort-grip version, the Fencing Plier Comfort Grips 200 mm, is also in the range.
  • Cutting and gripping wire in confined spaces and deep recesses: the Maun Long Nose Side Cutter Parallel Plier 200 mm has long tapered jaws with 70 mm of useable jaw length (how far down the jaws the wire can be held and cut) and a 4.0 x 2.0 mm tip (width and thickness of the jaw point; smaller fits tighter gaps). When wire ends deep inside an enclosure or cable loom and shorter jaws block your view, you can reach in with the long nose and keep the cut point visible. Parallel-action jaws still grip evenly along the full jaw, so the wire doesn't twist when you're working at an angle. For tighter access, the Long Nose Side Cutter Parallel Plier 160 mm offers a 50 mm useable jaw and a 3.0 x 1.5 mm tip, and the 160 mm also comes in a comfort-grip PVC version.
  • Repetitive or production cutting where hand fatigue matters: the Maun Long Nose Side Cutter Parallel Plier Return Spring 200 mm is the only model in this range with a return spring (a spring that opens the jaws on its own after each cut, so you don't have to prise them apart by hand). When you're cutting dozens of parts an hour on a bench, opening the jaws yourself between every cut tires your hand well before the shift ends. With the return spring, the jaws open on their own between cuts, so you can work one-handed, cutting and feeding parts at pace, with the long-nose reach for confined work still there.

FAQs

Which of these can be used on live electrical wire?

The 1000V Insulated Side Cutter Parallel Plier For Hard Wire 200 mm is the only model in this range certified for live electrical work, tested to IEC 60900:2018 and usable up to 1000V AC and 1500V DC. Every other model in this range carries a warning that it must not be used on live electrical wire. When buying any insulated tool, look for the double-triangle 1000V symbol and the full IEC 60900:2018 standard hard-marked on the product.

Are all the jaws hardened to HRC 62-65?

No. The side-cutter-for-hard-wire and fencing models are hardened to HRC 62-65, and the long-nose models to HRC 57. The lower hardness on the long-nose models is a deliberate trade for the finer jaw geometry those models need.
